Claire Atherton ist zu Gast für eine Master Class. Die französisch-amerikanische Filmeditorin ist verantwortlich für die Montage von über 80 Filmen, entstanden in wiederholten Zusammenarbeiten unter anderem mit den Regiepersonen Chantal Akerman, Éric Baudelaire, Wang Bing und Noëlle Pujol. Über 30 Jahre lang war sie die Editorin von den Filmen und Filminstallationen von Chantal Akerman.
Wir schauen gemeinsam den Dokumentarfilm De l’Autre Côté (Regie: Chantal Akerman) aus dem Jahr 2002. Im Gespräch danach erzählt Claire vom Prozess, davon, dass es ihr wichtig ist, nicht zu viel Vorwissen zu haben beim Start eines Projektes.
«When I receive images from a new project I really want to be open. First of all I want to receive them and breathe them in my body and maybe then later understand something and build a film. But not at the very beginning understand and classify and give a purpose to each image. Just the contrary. It’s important for me to have this open and free space for receiving. (…) You have to lose yourself to find what you don’t know.»
Sie spricht über die Wichtigkeit des Tons und der Setzung von Musik. Eine Diskussion entsteht über die Herausforderung, allen Protagonist*innen im Film auf Augenhöhe zu begegnen. Im Gespräch kommt Claire immer wieder darauf zurück, dass in einem Film nicht nur das Gesagte und Gezeigte Inhalt vermittelt:
«(…) meaning comes not only from words or from the plot, it also comes from the rhythm, the combination of all the substances, the colors, the sounds, the shadows, and also time. Everything is meaningful. The little silence before someone’s sentence is sometimes as meaningful as the sentence ITSELF. It’s incredible in editing how THE little things can be very important.»
Am Nachmittag beantwortet Claire die Fragen der Studierenden und erzählt mehr über ihre Arbeitsweise. Die chinesische Poesie und Malerei mit ihrem bildlichen Erzählen und dem Umgang mit Leerraum hat einen grossen Einfluss auf ihre Art zu arbeiten. Ihr ist wichtig, das Nichtwissen zuzulassen, dafür Raum zu lassen und die Komplexität von Menschen und Situationen nicht zu vereinfachen, sondern zu respektieren.
